The Geology Behind the Scenery in Owens Valley Movies

A Special Lecture by Allen Glazner.  He is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He conducts research involving volcanic rocks, granites, and plate tectonics in eastern California; including the Owens Valley, Sierra Nevada, Yosemite National Park and the Mojave Desert.  Allen will give a brief overview of events that produced the "Deepest Valley" and its remarkable scenery.  He is the author of 3 popular books on California's geology: Geology Underfoot in Owens Valley and Death Valley, Geology Underfoot in Yosemite National Park, and Geology Underfoot in Southern California.

Winter 2018-2019: Will it be “Tremendously Big and Tremendously Wet”?

Presented by Chris Smallcomb.  He is a meterologist with the National Weather Service in Reno.  He will present on his expectations for the coming winter season and what that means for the region.  Over the past six years, we've seen wide swings from exceptional drought to prolific amounts of rain and snow, driven primarily by the numbers of atmospheric rivers.  He'll speak on the limits of weather predictions - and specific challenges to forecasting weather and flooding in the Eastern Sierra.
