BISHOP AREA HISTORY
Bishop was named after Samuel A. Bishop on August 22nd, 1861. Bishop, his wife
three white men and several herders, driving 500 to 600 head of cattle and 50
horses arrived in Owens Valley where the established camp. The Paiute Indians
called Owens Lake by the name of “Pacheta” and the Owens River “Wakoppe.”
Inyo County is also an Indian name meaning “dwelling place of the great
spirit.”
The First People in the Bishop Area
It has been established that people lived in the Owens Valley as long as 3,000
years ago. Paiute is probably derived from the Indian word “Pah-Yah”,
meaning water. Owens was the southernmost permanent home of the Northern Paiute.
Evidence of their life is prominent throughout the Owens Valley; from petroglyphs,
obsidian chips, and house rings, which are found as high as 12,600 ft on a windswept
ridge in the White Mountains. This site is the highest known Indian Camp in North
America.
The First Settlers
Cattlemen and sheepherders first used the valley as a grazing area while passing
on to other destinations. By 1912 such diverse crops as celery, potatoes, alfalfa,
wheat and corn were being grown. Orchards produced apples, figs, almonds, walnuts,
peaches, pears, plums and berries – even grapes flourished in the temperate
climate of Bishop.
The Railroad made its’ debut in 1883 when the Carson & Colorado narrow
gauge railroad was built. The history of this railroad and the effects that
it had upon the valley are recorded at the Laws Railroad Museum and Historical
Site. The original narrow gauge engine, the “Slim Princess” is on
view plus eleven acres of exhibits.
Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power
Between the years of 1892 and 1904 California experienced a 12 year drought.
Over a period of time most of the land of the Owens Valley was purchased by
Los Angeles; and in November of 1913 the now famous Los Angeles Aqueduct was
completed, 223miles long and using no pumping stations, just gravity siphons
sending water to Southern California.
Brief History of the Paiute and Shoshone Indian Tribes
The tribes of this area were observant, resourceful and practical people who
from what the land could provide. All of their needs – food, clothing,
housing, medicine, arts and entertainment – were satisfied by their efforts
at hunting and gathering. In all seasons the land gave up to them what they
needed.
Today these people are known by the names given by scholars to their languages
– Paiute and Shoshone. They now reside on four reservations in the Owens
Valley. The southernmost is the Lone Pine Indian Reservation, northward is Fort
Independence Reservation and Big Pine Indian Reservation. The largest and northernmost
is the Bishop Indian Reservation, just west of town.
