to the Bishop Area Weather page. We have some of the most variable weather in
California. During the summer months, 50 degree temperature ranges between night
and day are not uncommon. And in the winter we can have a sunny 65 degree day
followed by freezing temps and heavy snowfall the next!
Due to the great variations in elevation in our area
(4,200' to 14,000') temperatures vary widely. As a rule of thumb, for every
1,000 feet in elevation gain, the temperature drops 5 degrees. So while it may
be 95 degrees in downtown Bishop on a hot July day, a short 25 minute drive up
Bishop Creek Canyon will take you to elevations from 8,000 to 10,000 feet where
the temperature is a pleasant 70.
For the town of Bishop, the all time low temperature
of -8 degrees was set in January of 1987. The hottest temperature ever recorded
in Bishop, 109 degrees, was set on July 22, 2003 (Official Nat'l Weather Service temps). The mean average rainfall in Bishop is 5.4
inches. Average snowfall is 6 inches. The humidity is characteristically low,
in fact, the lowest humidity ever recorded anywhere on earth is found in the
White Mountains, 7 miles east of Bishop.

Yosemite travelers note: SR 120, Tioga Pass Road (east entrance into Yosemite Park) is normally closed from Nov. to late May of each year due
to a heavy snow pack. During
these months, there is no access
to Yosemite Nat’l Park via Tioga Pass from US 395 on the Eastern side of the
Sierra. Visitors to Yosemite must cross the
Eastern Sierra on Hwy 50 (155 miles north of Bishop) or SR 58 (150 miles south
of Bishop) to access highways into Yosemite Park.
